Using the VECI Decal to Select the Right Gasket

Getting the Correct Gasket

In some instances, it may be necessary to know a vehicle’s engine/engine family number to determine the right Fel-Pro® gasket set for the repair. Look to the Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) decal to find this important information prior to looking up a part number. Be sure to always check the VECI label to help ensure that you are ordering the proper Fel-Pro gasket set for the repair occasion.

Finding the VECI Label

The VECI decal placement and format may vary by manufacturer. The decal includes the details regarding the engine type and emissions system installed on the vehicle. The decal is usually found in a few different locations on the vehicle:

Locating the Engine Family Number

The Engine Family Number (EFN) is listed on every VECI label. This can also be called the Emission Family Code or Test Group Number.

You may also be able to use the VIN number to determine the Engine Family Number. The VIN number is located at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle as well as in the door jamb area of the driver’s door. The VIN number can be decoded to provide the year and engine code. Look to characters 4-8 of the VIN number for key features of the vehicle like the model, body style, engine and trim level while character 10 indicates the model year of a vehicle (not the year it was delivered or sold).

The door jamb sticker will have the date the vehicle was manufactured along with the gross vehicle weight (GVW). Sometimes there are breaks during the model year which may require a different gasket set. Some trucks come in different GVW and may require different gasket sets.
