Inside the Problem – Rising Engine Temperatures
Once only found in performance vehicles, turbocharged engines can now be found in many passenger cars, trucks and SUVs on the road today. Both domestic and foreign nameplate manufacturers have turned to turbocharged engines as a way to downsize the engine to improve fuel economy with no decrease in performance. This power results in a hotter running engine, including higher exhaust temperatures.
Higher engine and exhaust temperatures make conventional gasket materials susceptible to failure due not only to extreme temperatures, but also to pressure and vibration. When a conventional gasket fails, the engine may create less power due to an exhaust leak. This can result in a decrease in acceleration and gas mileage. The proprietary high temperature alloy material in Fel-Pro’s HTA gaskets retain their sealing performance up to 1600°F providing:
- Excellent torque retention.
- Superior performance over typical stainless-steel material that may crack or otherwise experience a loss of sealing contact stress at extreme high temperatures.
High Temperature Alloy Embossed Bead Recovery Test
Embossed sealing beads act as a spring to maintain sealing contact stress under most operating conditions. At extreme high temperatures, Fel-Pro’s embossed sealing beads maintain their integrity to effectively seal the joint as compared to typical stainless steel sealing beads that can soften, which results in gasket leakage.
