Different Head Bolt Sizes on 2.4L Chrysler Engines
For Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram and Fiat vehicles equipped with a 2.4L engine between 2009 -2020, technicians will find that there are two different head bolt designs used in production – a head bolt that has a short head that measures 5/16" long and a bolt with a head that measures 1/2" long. When working on this engine, it is important to be aware there are two different head bolt designs in use and that that each design has a different torque sequence and torque values.
How to Determine Head Bolt Size
Knowing which head bolt design you’re installing is crucial to a successful repair. To identify the head bolt design, measure the bolt head from the washer to the top of the head bolt to determine if it is a 5/16" or 1/2" design. Once you know the length of the head bolt, you’ll be able to get the right torque sequence.
Torque Sequence
Reference the chart below to get the correct torque sequence.
Torque Steps | 5/16" Shorter Head | 1/2" Longer Head |
---|---|---|
First | 25 ft/lbs | 25 ft/lbs |
Second | 45 ft/lbs | 54 ft/lbs |
Third | 45 ft/lbs | 54 ft/lbs |
Final | Additional 90° | Additional 90° |
Fel-Pro® Head Bolt Set ES72267
Fel-Pro offers the long head bolt style for this repair with part number ES72267. Per Chrysler, you don’t have to install the same length of bolt removed, they just emphasize being sure to use the correct torque specs depending on the length of head bolt. You can install the Fel-Pro long head bolt whether you’re replacing a short head bolt or a long head bolt. When installing the Fel-Pro part, be sure to follow the torque specs for the 1/2" longer head style.
In addition, Chrysler advises that it’s okay to reuse the head bolts if they are not necked down or thinned out at the threaded area. Comparing the threaded areas of one bolt to another can help you determine if the threaded area is necked down. Fel-Pro recommends replacing the head bolts to ensure a complete repair.
There are 10 head bolts used on the engine, with eight of them using a captured washer on the head bolt and two bolts that do not. The front two head bolt locations closest to the timing chain area, do not come with captured washers. These locations require a washer to be installed with the beveled edge of the washer facing the head bolt.
