When Joey McFalls bought a tuner for his Duramax-powered 2003 Chevy, he didn’t know it would lead to opening one of the most successful diesel specialty shops in Northeast Ohio. We visited Joey’s shop to learn how he got to where he is now, and where he’s heading in the future.
Fel-Pro: So how did you move from tuning and working on your truck to tuning and working on trucks for others?
Joey: “I was always working on my truck. I swapped a 12-valve Cummins engine into it and perfected the tune. A few friends asked me to tune their trucks, so I did. Word got around that I was tuning at a fair price, so I started taking on maintenance and repair jobs. It just grew from there. At first, I only wanted to work on Duramax-powered trucks, but people started coming to me with Power Stroke and Cummins powered trucks, too.”
F: What would you say helped you make the jump to being as successful as you are today?
J: “A few years ago, someone referred a Power Stroke 6.0L truck to me. It had been to other shops and no one could figure out what was wrong with it. It ended up being a broken reluctor on the crankshaft, so the engine wouldn’t fire. After that, word got around that we specialized in diesels and it’s to the point now where other shops will refer customers to us.”
F: You’re very successful and still growing – what’s your business philosophy?
J: “Someone told me once to ‘work until the people who inspire you become your competitors’ and I took that to heart. There’s always going to be someone who knows more than I do or can do something better than I can, so I just keep working and keep learning.”
F: That really shows in the work you’re doing here. So you knew this was coming – how do you feel about Fel-Pro Gaskets?
J: When I repair or rebuild an engine, I can’t just hope the gaskets I use will work. I use Fel-Pro gaskets every day because they don’t let me down. Head gaskets on diesel trucks are big jobs that I don’t want to have to do again, and thanks to Fel-Pro, the only time I see my customer come back is for modifications or maintenance after a head gasket job.
